Be Back Whenever

Beers we tried in Africa

Beers in Tanzania seem to have an animal theme to their names. We found all these beers somewhere in Tanzania while on a safari.  This page does a pretty good job of describing the beers in detail as to flavor, ingredients, etc.  Susan just drank them without making any tasting notes!

Safari beer

Safari Beer – Made by Tanzania Breweries in Dar es Salaam.

Kilimanjaro Beer

Kilimanjaro Beer – Another beer made by Tanzania Breweries. I like the label and the t-shirt with “If you can’t climb it, drink it.”

Tusker Beer

Tusker is a Kenyan beer owned by East African Breweries. It is also the largest African beer brand in the Diageo group. The beer’s slogan means “My beer, My country” in Swahili.

Ndovu Beer

Ndovu Special Malt is brewed by Tanzania Breweries Ltd. in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

Serengeti beer

Serengeti has the second largest share of the Tanzania Beer market and is owned by East African Breweries.

The beer menu at Rivertrees Country Lodge. Divide by about 2200 to get the price in U.S. dollars.

We found a few more beers that are South African. Castle is a mass-produced beer sold all over Africa.

Castle beer

Castle is a South African beer owned by SAB Miller. We drank it in Tanzania but found it in Capetown, too.

Mitchell Brewery is in Knysna, South Africa where you can take a tour of the brewery (We didn’t.) We sampled some of their beer at their Scottish Ale House on the Victoria and Albert Waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa.

Mark at Mitchell BRewery

Mark had to try one of the Mitchell Brewery beers, too.

Mitchell's Scottish Ale house menu

Mitchell’s Scottish Ale house is on the Victoria and Albert Waterfront in Cape Town and serves beer made by Mitchell’s Brewery.

Susan at Mitchell Brewery

Susan tried Old Wobbly (7% ABV) made by Mitchell’s Brewery.

When we got to the Seychelles, we went to various grocery stores to see what kinds of beer we could find.  I’m not sure who has the distribution rights for the Seychelles but, whoever does, manages to bring in all sorts of different beers – and we tried lots of them.  We heard a rumor that you can tour the Seychelles Brewery but Mark wasn’t very successful in getting anyone to answer email to let us know how we might do a tour!

Finnish Beer

Lapin Kulta is imported from Finland!

Mauritius beers - Phoenix and Blue Marlin.

Phoenix and Blue Marlin beers both come from Mauritius. We both think Phoenix tastes awful and we even left one in the fridge when we went to the next island. That’s what we thought of THAT beer.

EKU beer in the Seychelles

EKU was imported from Germany

seychelles seybrew bottle

SeyBrew Lager is brewed by Seychelles Breweries Limited (SBL) in La Rocher, Seychelles.  Someone opted for water one day!

After our gorillas treks in Rwanda, a beer tasted pretty good (after showers and clean clothes and lunch).  We only found two different beers but they were both pretty good.

rwanda virunga beer

We drank some Virunga beer at Volcanoes House after our treks with the gorillas. Beer tasted SO good after a shower and clean clothes. It’s brewed by Brasserie des Mille Collines (Unibra).

RWanda Primus beer

Primus beer was pretty tasty, too! It’s brewed by Brasseries et Limonaderies du Rwanda-BRALIRWA (Heineken Rwanda)
